The Large Family Card (Karta Dużej Rodziny, KDR) is a nationwide discount and benefits program for families raising at least three children. It has existed since 2014 and expands with new partners every year. In 2026 the offer covers hundreds of discounts — from PKP train tickets to fuel discounts.
Who can apply for the Large Family Card
The card is available to parents and spouses of parents raising at least three children. Conditions for the children:
- children up to 18 years old,
- children up to 25 years old — if they are in education,
- children with a moderate or significant disability certificate — with no age limit.
There is no income criterion — the card is available regardless of family earnings. A parent or parent's spouse receives a card with no expiry date; children receive one until they reach the age limit noted above.
What discounts the Large Family Card offers
Discounts are split into two groups: those offered by state institutions and those from commercial partners.
Discounts at public institutions
- PKP Intercity — 37% discount for parents, 49% for children on Intercity and TLK train tickets.
- PKS — 50% discount on bus travel.
- State and municipal museums — free or discounted admission (scope depends on the institution).
- National parks — free admission.
- Consular offices — reduced passport fees.
Discounts from commercial partners
- Orlen — fuel discount (amount varies by campaign).
- Energa / Orlen Energia — electricity discounts for individual customers.
- Partner pharmacy chains — discounts on over-the-counter medicine and children's products.
- Shops and services — the partner list includes over 3,000 businesses (banks, insurers, medical facilities, hotels, sports shops, and many more).

European Large Family Card
Since 2024, Polish families with the KDR can use the European Large Family Card, valid in EU countries that have joined the program. This means discounts with foreign partners when traveling around Europe.
How to apply
You can apply for the Large Family Card:
- Online via the mObywatel app — the electronic card is available immediately in your phone once the application is processed. This is the fastest and most convenient route.
- Through the empatia.mpips.gov.pl portal — an online form, with the plastic card mailed to you.
- In person at a Municipal or District Social Welfare Centre (MOPS/GOPS) — required documents: the parent's ID and the children's birth certificates or a certificate of school/university enrolment.
The plastic card is issued free of charge, as is a duplicate in case of loss.
Large Family Card and the 800+ benefit
The Large Family Card and the 800+ benefit (formerly 500+) are separate programs — using one does not exclude the other. The KDR is not counted as family income when assessing eligibility for other benefits.

Frequently asked questions about the Large Family Card
Does the KDR apply to a family of three children when one turns 18?
Yes, if that child continues in education (up to age 25). In that case the three-children condition is still met and the whole family keeps its right to the KDR.
Can a single parent get the Large Family Card?
Yes. The card is available to any parent (or legal guardian) raising at least three children — regardless of marital status or family circumstances.
Is the KDR free?
Yes, issuing the Large Family Card (both electronic and plastic) is entirely free. A duplicate in case of loss is also free.
Will a spouse who is not the biological parent of the child get the KDR?
Yes, a parent's spouse is entitled to the Large Family Card even if they are not the biological parent of the children. A formal marriage is required.
How long does processing a KDR application take?
For an application via mObywatel, the electronic card is usually available within a few business days. The plastic card is issued within 30 days of submitting a complete application.
Does the KDR work in other EU countries?
Yes, if the family uses the European Large Family Card, discounts apply with partners in EU countries that have joined the program. The list of foreign partners is available on the program's European portal.
What happens to the KDR when a child exceeds the eligible age?
That child's card becomes invalid once the age limit is exceeded. The cards of the remaining children and parents stay valid, as long as the family still has at least three eligible children.
Does the KDR work in the mObywatel app without a plastic card?
Yes. The electronic card in mObywatel has the same legal validity as the plastic one. Program partners are required to honor both forms.
Is the KDR counted as income?
No. The Large Family Card is a discount program, not a cash benefit. The value of discounts received is not treated as income and does not affect income-dependent benefits.
