Social benefits in Poland

Poland's social benefit system is a safety net of ZUS insurance benefits and government programmes that support families and workers at key moments in life. The benefit calculators on Liczbnik.pl help you estimate what you are entitled to without hours of searching through regulations. Sick pay (zasiłek chorobowy) is paid by ZUS when incapacity for work lasts more than 33 days (for employees under 50) or 14 days (over 50). It equals 80% of the assessment base — the average salary over the preceding 12 months. In hospital the rate falls to 70%. Maternity benefit is 100% of the assessment base for the first 8 weeks after birth, then 81.5% for the remainder of maternity leave. A parent may also take 32 weeks of parental leave at 81.5%, giving up to 52 weeks of paid leave in total. The 800+ programme (formerly 500+) pays PLN 800 per month for every child up to age 18, regardless of family income. It requires a single application via the mObywatel platform or ZUS PUE and is then paid automatically. The birth grant (becikowe) of PLN 1,000 is subject to an income threshold of PLN 1,922 net per household member. The Dobry Start programme provides PLN 300 once a year for every child in education up to age 20 (or 24 for those with disabilities), paid directly into a bank account with no income test. Carer's allowance is available when you must care for a sick child under 14 or a sick adult family member — it is 80% of the assessment base for up to 60 days per year. The benefit calculators are indicative guides; for individual matters contact ZUS directly or the relevant social welfare centre.
