Car costs in Poland

Car running costs in Poland cover a range of items that every driver and car buyer should understand before making financial decisions. Fuel consumption — measured in litres per 100 km — is the most visible ongoing expense and varies significantly between vehicle types, driving styles and road conditions. For anyone importing a car from outside the European Union, vehicle excise duty is a major upfront cost that depends on engine displacement and the declared customs value of the vehicle. Cars brought in from within the EU are also subject to excise, though the rates and calculation rules differ. Registration fees cover the cost of number plates, the vehicle registration document, the inspection sticker and a mandatory roadworthiness test where required. The total typically ranges from a few dozen to over two hundred Polish zloty depending on vehicle type and registration history. OC insurance — the compulsory third-party liability cover required by Polish law — protects other road users in the event of an accident caused by the policyholder. Premiums are set individually based on the make and engine power of the car, the driver's claims history and age, and the chosen insurer, and can range from a few hundred to several thousand zloty per year. Our car calculators let you compute fuel consumption from trip data, estimate the full cost of a journey, compare petrol against diesel or LPG, and check excise and registration costs for an imported vehicle.

Frequently asked questions about cars

How to calculate fuel consumption?

Consumption (l/100km) = (fuel used in litres / km driven) × 100.

How much does 1 km of driving cost?

Cost per km = consumption × fuel price / 100. E.g. 7 l/100km × 7 PLN/l = 0.49 PLN/km.

What is the difference between operational and financial leasing?

Operational leasing is a rental — instalments are a business expense; financial leasing is like a loan — the car is a fixed asset.

A business can deduct 75% of VAT and costs (100% if the car is used exclusively for business).

The mileage rate is the amount employees receive for using a private car for business purposes (0.89 PLN/km).

Trip cost = (distance × consumption / 100) × fuel price + toll fees.

An electric car is cheaper to run with high mileage and access to affordable charging.

Leasing costs include: initial fee, monthly instalments, insurance and service (full-service leasing).

OC cost depends on engine power, claims history and insurer — usually a few hundred to a few thousand PLN.
