FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) is a metric popular among strength athletes and bodybuilders. Unlike ordinary BMI, FFMI accounts only for muscle, bone and organ mass — leaving out body fat entirely. That makes it a much better descriptor of muscular development than BMI, which tends to overstate "overweight" in muscular people.

How to calculate FFMI

The FFMI formula requires body weight, height, and body fat percentage:

  1. Calculate fat-free mass (FFM): FFM = body weight × (1 − body fat % / 100).
  2. Divide FFM by height in meters squared: FFMI = FFM / height².
  3. Optionally apply a height correction to 1.8 m: adjusted FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height).

Worked example

A man weighing 85 kg, 1.80 m tall, with 15% body fat: FFM = 85 × (1 − 0.15) = 72.25 kg. FFMI = 72.25 / 1.80² = 72.25 / 3.24 = 22.3. That result indicates well-developed muscularity, achievable naturally with consistent strength training and a proper diet.

FFMI reference ranges

  • 16-18 — below-average muscle mass.
  • 18-20 — average muscle mass (typical for untrained men).
  • 20-22 — above average, seen in people who train regularly.
  • 22-25 — very good muscle mass, usually the result of years of training.
  • Above 25 — a result rarely reached without pharmacological assistance.

For women, reference values are roughly 4-5 points lower, reflecting naturally lower muscle mass and a different fat distribution.

Limitations of the index

FFMI doesn't account for how muscle mass is distributed across the body or its quality (strength, density). The result also depends heavily on how accurately body fat was measured — calipers and bioelectrical scales both carry a fair margin of error. Treat FFMI as a rough progress indicator, not a precise diagnostic tool.

What FFMI is useful for

FFMI lets you track muscle-mass gains over time independently of fluctuations in body fat. It's also useful for judging whether a given physique is achievable naturally — many coaches and researchers use it as one signal when assessing the credibility of athletes' results.

How is FFMI different from BMI?

BMI accounts for total body weight, including fat mass, while FFMI is based purely on fat-free mass. That means FFMI describes muscular development far better in strength athletes, whose BMI is often inflated despite a low body fat percentage.

What FFMI is considered the "natural limit"?

According to widely cited research (including Kouri et al.), a value around 25 is treated as the ceiling for natural achievement, though individual genetic predisposition can shift that boundary in either direction.

Is FFMI accurate without a body fat measurement?

No. Without knowing your body fat percentage, you cannot correctly determine fat-free mass, and therefore FFMI. The accuracy of the result depends on the quality of the fat-measurement method used (e.g. calipers, bioimpedance, DEXA).

Does FFMI make sense for women?

Yes, though reference values differ — women naturally have a lower FFMI due to lower muscle mass and a physiologically higher body fat percentage.

How quickly can FFMI increase?

The pace depends on training experience, diet and genetics. Beginners can gain as much as 1 FFMI point a year, while advanced athletes see considerably slower progress.

Is the correction to 1.8 m height necessary?

It's not mandatory, but it makes comparing results across people of different heights easier, since it standardizes the index to one reference height.

Does a high FFMI mean good health?

Not necessarily. FFMI describes the amount of muscle mass, not overall health, cardiovascular fitness, or diet quality. It's best treated as just one of many indicators.

Is FFMI used in medicine?

It's used more often in fitness and bodybuilding than in standard clinical diagnostics, though it can be helpful when assessing sarcopenia (muscle-mass loss) in older adults.

Does supplementation affect FFMI?

Adequate protein and creatine intake can support muscle-mass gains, which indirectly raises FFMI, but supplementation alone without strength training won't produce a meaningful effect.
