The roll turf calculator helps you work out how much rolled sod you need and how much laying a lawn will cost. Enter the area, add a cutting reserve and provide prices — the calculator returns the area with reserve, the turf cost and the soil preparation cost. Useful when planning a new lawn.
Area with reserve = area × (1 + reserve%/100) Turf cost = area with reserve × price per m² Preparation cost = area × preparation price per m² Total cost = turf cost + preparation cost
100 m² lawn with 5% reserve = 105 m² of sod. Turf cost: 105 × 12 = PLN 1,260. Soil preparation: 100 × 15 = PLN 1,500. Total cost = PLN 2,760.
The price of roll turf (rolled sod) in Poland in 2026 is roughly PLN 8–18/m² depending on species and quality. Standard recreational turf costs approx. PLN 10–12/m², while drought-resistant or shade turf costs approx. PLN 14–18/m². Transport and soil preparation costs should be added.
A reserve (usually 5–10%) is necessary because turf rolls have standard dimensions (e.g. 0.4 × 2.5 m = 1 m²) and some material is lost to cutting on irregularly shaped plots. For a rectangular lawn 5% is enough; for plots with curves, flower beds and paths, allow 8–10%.
Soil preparation (weed removal, levelling, spreading topsoil, rolling) costs roughly PLN 10–25/m². A price of PLN 15/m² covers a typical service with soil delivery and levelling. Good preparation is crucial — it determines whether the sod takes root.
Roll turf can be laid throughout the growing season, from April to October. The best times are spring (April–May) and early autumn (September), when soil is moist and temperatures moderate. Summer laying is possible but requires intensive watering. Sod must be laid within 24 hours of delivery.
Rolled sod usually roots within 2–3 weeks with proper watering. In the first days the lawn needs abundant daily watering, then the frequency can be reduced. The lawn reaches full resistance to walking and mowing after approx. 4–6 weeks.
Roll turf is more expensive to buy than seeding (seeds cost approx. PLN 1–3/m²), but it gives an instant finished lawn and eliminates the risk of uneven germination and weeds. Including labour and waiting time, the difference in total cost is smaller than the material price alone.
In the first week the sod needs approx. 10–15 litres of water per m² daily so the roots do not dry out. Watering is best done in the morning or evening. After rooting (2–3 weeks) the amount can be reduced to 1–2 waterings per week, adjusted to the weather.
The most popular mixes are recreational lawns (ryegrass, fescue, bluegrass) — universal and wear-resistant. For shaded spots, mixes with more fescue are chosen. For ornamental gardens — fine-leaf carpet lawns requiring more frequent mowing.
The calculator computes the cost of the sod itself (price per m² times area with reserve) and the soil preparation cost. It does not include the cost of transporting the rolls (depending on distance and quantity) or laying labour. Transport is usually an extra PLN 100–400, and laying approx. PLN 5–10/m² if hired out.
In the first year regular watering is key, with the first mowing once it reaches approx. 8–10 cm (cut by 1/3). Starter fertilising is applied after 3–4 weeks, then multi-component fertilisers in spring and autumn. Avoid heavy traffic in the first weeks so the sod roots well.
Results are indicative and based on average market prices in Poland 2026. They do not include transport or laying labour. A final quote requires a turf supplier offer.
