Bus drivers keep Poland's cities, towns, and regions connected, transporting millions of passengers every day across municipal networks, intercity coach routes, and international services. Salaries range from 4,806 PLN gross (the 2026 minimum wage) for newly qualified drivers on local urban routes to 13,000 PLN gross for experienced drivers operating articulated buses or international coaches. The average pay of around 7,000 PLN gross reflects the high level of responsibility involved in passenger safety, the demanding shift patterns, and the requirement for specialist driving licences that take time and money to obtain.
What does a bus driver do?
A bus driver is responsible for safely transporting passengers along a prescribed route according to a published timetable. Duties include pre-departure vehicle inspection, operating the bus in compliance with traffic regulations and company procedures, announcing stops, assisting passengers with disabilities, handling ticketing or validating passes, reporting technical defects, and completing driving log entries. Drivers on intercity and international routes additionally manage rest periods under EU drivers' hours regulations (EC 561/2006), handle customs checks, and navigate using digital mapping systems.
Licences and qualifications
Polish law requires bus drivers to hold a Category D driving licence (for vehicles with more than eight passenger seats) and a Certificate of Professional Competence (Kwalifikacja wstępna or KKZ) — a regulated vocational qualification confirmed by a Driver Qualification Card (karta kwalifikacji kierowcy). Professional CPC periodic training of 35 hours every five years is mandatory. These licence requirements represent a significant barrier to entry but also provide job security for qualified drivers.
Salary by experience level
- New Driver: 4,806–5,500 PLN gross — recently qualified, assigned to less complex urban routes, building experience under supervision.
- Regular Driver: 6,500–8,500 PLN gross — handles standard urban or regional scheduled routes reliably, eligible for overtime and shift supplements.
- Experienced / Articulated Bus Driver: 9,000–13,000 PLN gross — qualified to drive articulated vehicles, coaches, or double-deckers; may work on premium intercity or international routes.
Demand and outlook
Polish cities are expanding their public transport fleets in response to growing urbanisation and environmental policy goals, creating consistent demand for qualified bus drivers. Many municipal operators report persistent vacancies because the number of new Category D licence holders entering the market is insufficient to meet fleet expansion and driver retirement rates. This shortage gives qualified drivers real bargaining power, and many municipal operators have increased starting salaries significantly in recent years.
