What Does VO2max Mean?

Why Does VO2max Matter Beyond Sport?
Research consistently shows that VO2max is one of the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality — stronger than blood pressure, cholesterol or BMI in many studies. Moving from the "poor" to "average" category is associated with a 35% reduction in cardiovascular mortality risk. Every 1 MET increase in cardiorespiratory fitness (roughly 3.5 mL/kg/min) corresponds to a 13–15% reduction in all-cause mortality.

How Is VO2max Measured?

How to Improve VO2max
VO2max responds to training in 8–12 weeks. The most effective training methods:
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
Intervals at 90–100% of your maximum heart rate produce the greatest VO2max gains. The Norwegian method (popularised in sports science): 4 × 4-minute intervals at 90–95% max HR with 3-minute active recovery. Do this twice weekly and expect significant gains within 6–8 weeks.
Tempo Runs
Running at your lactate threshold (roughly the pace you can sustain for 45–60 minutes with effort) for 20–40 minutes develops aerobic capacity and improves the pace at which your VO2max occurs.
High-Volume Easy Running (Zone 2 Training)

Strength Training

A sedentary individual beginning regular training can expect 15–25% improvement in VO2max over 6 months. A moderately fit person might gain 5–10%.
