Cooking at home is one of the simplest ways to reduce household food expenses. The cost of a home-cooked meal per serving is typically PLN 6–15 — many times less than eating out. The meal cost calculator helps you accurately estimate spending on ingredients and energy, divided by the number of servings, and compare the result with a typical restaurant price. Enter the total cost of the purchased ingredients, the estimated energy cost (gas or electricity), and the number of servings. The calculator will instantly compute the cost per serving, the total meal cost, and your savings compared to eating at a restaurant. It is an ideal tool for conscious food budget planning.
The calculator computes meal cost in three simple steps: 1. Total meal cost = ingredient cost + energy cost (gas/electricity) 2. Cost per serving = total cost / number of servings 3. Savings vs restaurant = PLN 35 (estimated restaurant price) − cost per serving If savings are negative, the meal costs more than the estimated restaurant price — for example when using premium ingredients or when preparing only one or two servings.
Inputs: ingredient cost PLN 30 (chicken breast, vegetables, rice), energy cost PLN 3 (cooking 45 minutes). Total: PLN 33. With 4 servings: cost per serving = PLN 33 / 4 = PLN 8.25. Estimated restaurant price: PLN 35. Savings: PLN 35 − 8.25 = PLN 26.75 per serving. Four people save PLN 107 with just one meal.
To calculate the cost of a meal per person, add up the prices of all ingredients used in the dish and the energy cost (gas or electricity). Then divide the total by the number of servings. The calculator does this automatically and shows the result in PLN per serving.
The average cost of a home-cooked dinner in Poland in 2026 is PLN 6–15 per serving depending on the type of dish and ingredients. Simple pasta or rice dishes are significantly cheaper than meat-based meals. Buying ingredients in bulk or during promotions can further reduce costs by 20–40%.
Cooking at home is on average 3–6 times cheaper than eating in a restaurant. The average price of a main course in a Polish restaurant in 2026 is PLN 30–50. The same meal cooked at home typically costs PLN 7–15 per serving. The calculator compares your cost per serving to the estimated restaurant price of PLN 35 and shows real savings.
Energy cost is the expense of gas or electricity used during cooking. For a dish cooked for 30 minutes on an electric hob (2 kW), the cost is around PLN 0.60–1.20 at current electricity prices. For a gas hob it is about PLN 0.30–0.80. Baking in an oven for one hour (2.5 kW) costs around PLN 1.25–2.50.
The calculator uses whatever figures you enter. For an accurate result, include spices, oil, salt, and other extras in the ingredient cost. A rough estimate is PLN 1–3 for a basic spice set for simple dishes or PLN 3–6 for more complex meals.
Planning meals in advance can save 20–35% of your food budget. Prepare a shopping list for the whole week, buy seasonal and local produce, cook larger batches, and store portions in the freezer. Cooking at home instead of ordering takeaway can save several hundred PLN per month.
Estimated costs of popular Polish dishes (4 servings, 2026): bigos (hunter's stew) PLN 25–40, breaded pork chop with potatoes PLN 30–50, tomato soup with pasta PLN 15–25, meat pierogi PLN 30–45, minced meat cutlets PLN 25–40. Costs may vary by region and store.
Yes, cooking larger batches and freezing them is one of the most effective saving strategies. Cooking double or triple quantities reduces the unit cost by 10–20% through better use of ingredients. You also save time and energy — reheating a ready meal uses far less gas or electricity than cooking from scratch.
If you order restaurant or takeaway food an average of 3 times a week at PLN 35 per meal, you spend about PLN 420 per month. Cooking the same meals at home for about PLN 10 per serving costs around PLN 120 — saving about PLN 300 per month, or PLN 3,600 per year.
The estimated restaurant price is a reference point of PLN 35 per serving used by the calculator. It is an indicative value based on the average price of a main course in mid-range Polish restaurants in 2026. If prices in your area are higher or lower, you can compare the resulting cost per serving with your local prices.
Results are indicative only. The estimated restaurant price (PLN 35/serving) is a market average — actual restaurant prices may vary. Energy cost is an approximate figure for self-estimation.
