Baby First Year Cost Calculator

The baby first year cost calculator helps you estimate the total expenses during your child's first year of life. Enter one-off layette costs, choose the type of childcare (nursery, childminder or parent at home) and the monthly supply costs — the calculator returns the annual cost of raising your baby. The result also shows the net amount after the birth benefit (becikowe, 1000 PLN).

How the calculator works

Monthly childcare cost: Nursery = 2500 PLN/month Childminder = 2000 PLN/month Parent at home = 0 PLN/month Annual childcare = monthly rate × 12 Annual supplies = monthly supplies × 12 Total = one-off + annual childcare + annual supplies After birth benefit = total − 1000 PLN

Example: layette 4700 PLN, nursery, supplies 700 PLN/month

One-off 4700 PLN + nursery 2500 PLN/month × 12 = 30,000 PLN + supplies 700 PLN × 12 = 8400 PLN. Total: 43,100 PLN. After birth benefit (−1000 PLN): 42,100 PLN.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to raise a baby in the first year?

According to the calculator, average first-year costs range from around 20,000–25,000 PLN (parent at home with minimal layette) to over 45,000 PLN (full nursery plus a complete layette). The type of childcare has the biggest impact on the budget.

What is included in a baby layette?

A typical layette includes: pram, baby carrier, car seat, cot or crib, mattress, bedding, breathing monitor, changing unit, clothes, nappies, bath items, thermometer, first aid kit and feeding accessories. Costs of 4000–8000 PLN depend on the products chosen.

How much does a nursery cost in Poland?

Nursery costs in Poland range from about 700 PLN (subsidised public nursery) to over 3000–4000 PLN per month (private nursery). The calculator uses an average of around 2500 PLN per month. Check the Aktywny Rodzic programme for up to 12,000 PLN/year in subsidies.

A full-time childminder in Poland typically costs 2000–4000 PLN per month. The calculator uses 2000 PLN as a market lower bound. A childminder offers more flexibility than a nursery but the overall cost can be higher.

Becikowe is a one-off family benefit of 1000 PLN paid after the birth of a child in Poland. The calculator deducts this amount from the total to show the net budget impact. Check eligibility criteria at your local social welfare office.

Aktywny Rodzic replaces the previous Zlóbek 400+ programme. It offers 1500 PLN/month for nursery or childminder care (Aktywnie w Zlobku) or 1500 PLN/month when a parent cares for the child at home (Aktywnie w Domu). Up to 12,000 PLN/year can substantially reduce costs.

It depends on family circumstances. A nursery supports a child's social development but is costly. Staying at home saves on childcare but means lost income or reliance on parental leave (around 70% of salary for up to 12 months). Calculate which option suits your budget best.

Besides becikowe and Aktywny Rodzic, you may be entitled to: maternity leave (20 weeks, 100% or 70% of salary), parental leave (32 or 34 weeks), the 800+ child benefit (800 PLN/month) and the child tax credit. Check with ZUS and the tax office.

Cloth nappies are cheaper over the year: an upfront cost of around 800–1500 PLN covers several years. Disposables cost around 200–400 PLN per month (2400–4800 PLN per year). Cloth nappies are eco-friendly but require washing and drying.

Buy a good-quality second-hand pram, cot and car seat (check condition and safety certificates). Choose clothes in slightly larger sizes since babies grow fast. Use baby clothes swapping and selling groups. Apply for all the benefits and subsidies you are entitled to.

Costs are indicative and depend on your region, lifestyle and family choices. Nursery and childminder rates are averages — actual prices may be higher or lower. Consult a financial adviser when planning your family budget.
