Recovery Time Calculator after Training

Proper recovery is the key to progress and injury prevention. This calculator estimates the time needed for full recovery after training, taking into account intensity, workout duration and the athlete's experience level.

How to use the calculator

Enter the workout duration in minutes, select intensity (easy/moderate/hard/very hard) and experience level. The calculator returns the recommended recovery time in hours and days, plus practical advice on what to do during recovery.

Calculation example

A one-hour moderate-intensity workout for an intermediate athlete requires approximately 24 hours of recovery. A beginner needs around 36 hours, while an advanced athlete needs about 18 hours after the same session.

Frequently asked questions

Why does recovery time depend on experience level?

More experienced athletes have better-adapted muscles, nervous systems and metabolic processes. Their bodies recover faster from the same absolute workload.

What counts as easy intensity training?

Easy intensity means you can hold a full conversation while exercising. Heart rate is typically 50-60% of maximum. Examples include gentle jogging, yoga or light walking.

What is supercompensation?

Supercompensation is the phase after recovery where your body reaches a higher fitness level than before the workout. Training again during this window leads to progress.

Yes. If you trained legs, you can train upper body the next day. Full-body workouts require more complete rest between sessions.

Key recovery aids include quality sleep (7-9 hours), adequate protein intake (1.6-2.2g/kg), hydration, light movement (active recovery), and stress management.

Warning signs include persistent muscle soreness, reduced performance, increased resting heart rate, poor sleep, irritability and frequent illness.

For most people, 48 hours is sufficient after hard training. However, very long or very heavy sessions (e.g. marathon, heavy powerlifting meet) may require 72-96 hours or more.

Yes. Recovery generally slows with age. Athletes over 40 often need 20-30% more recovery time than younger athletes doing the same workload.

Sleep is the most important recovery tool. Growth hormone is released primarily during deep sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours and prioritise sleep quality during heavy training phases.

Use it as a guideline, especially when planning your training week. Over time you will learn your body's signals and adjust recovery periods based on how you feel.
