Effective APR (RRSO) Calculator

The effective APR calculator estimates the RRSO (effective annual percentage rate) of a consumer loan. RRSO is the key figure when comparing loan offers because it captures not only the nominal interest rate but also commissions and the way costs accrue over time. Two offers with the same nominal rate can have very different RRSO if their commissions or repayment periods differ. Simply enter the loan amount, the annual nominal rate, the one-off commission and the number of months. The calculator returns the monthly annuity payment, the total of all payments, the total cost of credit in currency and the indicative RRSO as a percentage, so you can see what borrowing really costs you.

How we calculate RRSO

Monthly rate i = nominal / 100 / 12. Annuity payment = amount × i / (1 − (1 + i)^−n), or amount / n when the rate is zero. Total payments = payment × n. Total cost = total payments − amount + commission. RRSO is found by bisection: we search for the monthly rate r where the discounted sum of payments equals the amount disbursed (amount − commission), then RRSO = ((1 + r)^12 − 1) × 100.

Example: 20,000, 9%, commission 1,000, 36 months

For a 20,000 loan, 9% nominal rate, 1,000 commission and 36 months: the payment is about 635.99, total payments 22,895.81 and the total cost of credit 3,895.81. The indicative RRSO is about 13.29% — well above the 9% nominal rate, because the commission is deducted upfront.

Frequently asked questions

What is RRSO (effective APR)?

RRSO is the effective annual percentage rate — a figure showing the total cost of a loan over a year, expressed as a percentage. It includes the nominal interest rate as well as commissions and mandatory fees, letting you compare offers on a common basis.

How does RRSO differ from the nominal rate?

The nominal rate is just the interest on the borrowed capital. RRSO is usually higher because it also reflects commissions and the frequency of payments. A loan with a low nominal rate but a high commission can have a higher RRSO than one with a higher rate and no commission.

How does the calculator compute RRSO?

It first finds the annuity payment, then uses bisection to find the monthly internal rate of return at which the discounted sum of payments equals the amount actually disbursed (loan minus commission). RRSO = ((1 + r)^12 − 1) × 100.

Why does the commission raise the RRSO?

A commission deducted upfront reduces the amount you actually receive, even though payments are based on the full loan amount. You therefore pay more for a smaller real sum, which increases the effective cost of credit.

How does the loan term affect RRSO?

For the same commission, a longer term usually lowers the RRSO because the one-off commission is spread over more payments. However, a longer term means more interest overall, so the total cost in currency rises.

What is the total cost of credit?

It is the sum of all costs above the borrowed capital: interest plus commissions and fees. In this calculator: total cost = total payments − loan amount + commission. It is expressed in currency, unlike RRSO which is a percentage.
