Volume Converter

The volume converter lets you instantly convert a value from one unit of measurement to all other popular units — litres (l), millilitres (ml), cubic metres (m³), US gallons (US gal), imperial gallons (UK gal), fluid ounces (fl oz), cups and pints (pt). Simply enter the value and select the source unit. This converter is essential in cooking (US recipes use cups and fl oz), when buying fuel abroad (gallon vs litre), in construction (m³ of concrete or water), and in chemistry and pharmacy (ml of solutions). Results are calculated to 6 decimal places and updated in real time as you type.

How the volume converter works

Every unit of volume has a fixed conversion factor to litres (the base unit). The input value is multiplied by the factor for the chosen unit to obtain an intermediate result in litres. The intermediate result is then divided by the factor for each target unit. E.g. 1 m³ = 1,000 l; 1 US gal = 3.785411784 l; 1 UK gal = 4.54609 l; 1 ml = 0.001 l.

Example: how many litres is 2 US gallons?

2 US gallons × 3.785412 l/gal = 7.570824 litres, i.e. approx. 7,571 ml or 0.007571 m³. One US gallon equals 3.785412 litres, while one imperial (UK) gallon equals 4.54609 litres — a difference of nearly 20%.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres is 1 US gallon?

One US gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 litres. This is the legal definition used in the United States for liquid measurement. Do not confuse it with the UK (imperial) gallon, which equals 4.54609 litres.

What is the difference between a US gallon and a UK gallon?

The US gallon is 3.785411784 litres, while the UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 litres. The UK gallon is about 20% larger. Fuel economy figures stated in "mpg" differ significantly between the two countries because of this difference.

How many millilitres are in 1 litre?

There are exactly 1,000 millilitres (ml) in 1 litre (l). This is a base SI unit relationship: 1 l = 1 dm³ = 1,000 ml = 0.001 m³.

How many litres is 1 cubic metre (m³)?

One cubic metre equals exactly 1,000 litres (1 m³ = 1,000 l = 1,000,000 ml). This relationship is fundamental in engineering, plumbing and hydrology when calculating water volumes.

How many ml are in 1 fluid ounce (fl oz)?

One US fluid ounce equals approximately 29.5735 ml. The UK fluid ounce is slightly larger at approximately 28.4131 ml. This converter uses the US fluid ounce, which is standard in American recipes.

How many litres is 1 US cup?

One US cup equals 0.2365882365 litres, or approximately 236.59 ml. It is exactly 8 US fluid ounces. This unit is widely used in American and Canadian cooking recipes.
