How much does a dog really cost per month? The answer depends on the breed size, food quality, health status and lifestyle of the animal — but one thing is certain: the costs of keeping a dog are higher than most people expect before adopting. This dog ownership cost calculator lets you compute a personalised monthly dog budget in seconds. Simply choose the dog size and adjust the default values to your situation. The calculator will show you the total monthly cost, annual cost, and the estimated 10-year cost of dog ownership. The default values for a medium-sized dog (10–25 kg) are based on 2026 Polish market prices: food 250 PLN, vet 100 PLN, grooming 70 PLN, accessories 40 PLN, insurance 55 PLN, treats 50 PLN — totalling 565 PLN per month. For a small dog (<10 kg) the calculator suggests 400 PLN, for a large dog (>25 kg) — 780 PLN.
The calculator sums six basic monthly expense categories: 1. Food per month (PLN) — cost of dry, wet or raw food per month. 2. Vet per month (PLN) — annual preventive costs (vaccinations, deworming, check-ups, antiparasitic treatments) divided by 12. For a typical dog: 800–1200 PLN/year ÷ 12 = approx. 70–100 PLN/month. 3. Grooming per month (PLN) — groomer visits or home bathing costs. With visits every 6–8 weeks: visit price ÷ 7 × 4.3 weeks (average month). 4. Accessories per month (PLN) — depreciation of leads, collars, toys, bedding; hygiene supplies. 5. Insurance per month (PLN) — monthly veterinary insurance premium. 6. Treats per month (PLN) — snacks, training rewards. Monthly cost = sum of all six components. Annual cost = monthly cost × 12. 10-year cost = monthly cost × 120.
Dog size: medium (10–25 kg). Monthly components: - Food: 250 PLN - Vet care (annualised): 100 PLN - Grooming: 70 PLN - Accessories: 40 PLN - Insurance: 55 PLN - Treats: 50 PLN Total monthly cost: 250 + 100 + 70 + 40 + 55 + 50 = 565 PLN Annual cost: 565 × 12 = 6,780 PLN 10-year cost: 565 × 120 = 67,800 PLN For a small dog (<10 kg) the typical cost is around 400 PLN/month (4,800 PLN/year). For a large dog (>25 kg) — around 780 PLN/month (9,360 PLN/year). Remember to add one-time start-up costs and unexpected veterinary expenses on top of these figures.
The average monthly cost of owning a dog in Poland in 2026 ranges from about 400 PLN for a small dog to over 780 PLN for a large dog. A medium-sized dog typically costs 500–650 PLN per month. This covers food, vet care (amortised monthly), grooming, accessories, insurance and treats. Use the calculator to get a personalised figure based on your actual spending.
Regular monthly costs include: food (the largest item), preventive vet care (vaccinations, deworming, check-ups — amortised monthly), grooming and haircuts, accessories (lead, collar, toys, bedding), pet insurance, and treats. Separate one-time costs when getting a dog include: purchase or adoption fee, starter equipment (carrier, bowls, crate) and the first vet visit.
Dog insurance is especially worthwhile for breeds predisposed to genetic diseases or active dogs at risk of injury. Monthly premiums are typically 40–100 PLN depending on breed, age and coverage. Insurance can cover the cost of surgery (potentially several thousand PLN), cancer treatment or rehabilitation — expenses that would otherwise be financially devastating. It is worth comparing offers from several insurers.
Average annual veterinary costs for a healthy adult dog in Poland are 800–1,500 PLN, covering: vaccinations (150–300 PLN), deworming (60–120 PLN), anti-flea and anti-tick prevention (200–400 PLN), annual health check (100–200 PLN) and minor treatments. Costs can increase sharply in case of illness or accident — which is why it is advisable to build an emergency fund or take out veterinary insurance.
Food costs depend mainly on the size of the dog and the quality of the product. A small dog (up to 10 kg) needs 100–200 PLN/month for good dry food. A medium dog (10–25 kg) costs 200–350 PLN, and a large dog (over 25 kg) — 300–500 PLN or more. Wet food and raw (BARF) diets are more expensive. The cheapest options may be nutritionally inadequate, which increases vet costs in the long run.
Generally yes — the main reason is lower food consumption. A small dog eats roughly 2–4 times less than a large dog. However, some costs are similar regardless of size: insurance, many vet services (consultations, vaccinations) and accessories. Grooming can actually be more expensive for small long-haired breeds requiring regular professional care (e.g. Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese).
The average dog lives 10–15 years. At a monthly cost of 565 PLN (medium dog), the total cost over 10 years is about 67,800 PLN, and over 15 years — over 100,000 PLN. This excludes one-time start-up costs (purchase price, starter equipment) and unexpected medical expenses. The calculator makes it easy to estimate costs for any time period.
The first year with a dog is typically the most expensive. In addition to regular monthly costs, one-time expenses include: purchase or adoption (0–5,000+ PLN depending on breed and breeder), starter kit (bedding, bowls, lead, collar, carrier, toys) — approx. 500–1,500 PLN, first vaccinations and check-up (200–400 PLN), microchipping and spaying/neutering (300–800 PLN). The first year can cost 2,000–8,000 PLN more than subsequent years.
Proven ways to reduce costs: (1) buy food in larger packs — the per-kg price is lower; (2) compare prices of vets and groomers; (3) learn basic grooming at home (washing, brushing); (4) use loyalty programmes at pet shops; (5) DIY some accessories; (6) take out insurance — it protects against large unexpected bills; (7) visit the vet regularly for check-ups — early detection is cheaper than treating advanced disease.
Select the dog size (small, medium, large) — the calculator automatically fills in typical values for that category. Then adjust the individual fields to match your actual spending: food per month (PLN), vet per month (divide annual costs by 12), grooming per month (divide annual grooming cost by 12), accessories, insurance and treats. The calculator instantly shows monthly cost, annual cost and 10-year total, as well as a breakdown by category.
Values are indicative for 2026. Costs may vary significantly depending on breed, region and individual animal needs. The calculator does not include one-time purchase/adoption costs or major veterinary treatment expenses. Consult a veterinarian if you have concerns about your dog's health.
