Currency exchange is a daily reality for millions of people in Poland — tourists, cross-border workers, investors, and businesses trading internationally. Knowing the current rate and being able to convert amounts quickly can save hundreds of zloty on a single transaction.
Where Do EUR/PLN, USD/PLN and GBP/PLN Rates Come From?
The zloty's exchange rate is set on the global Forex market by supply and demand. In Poland, the reference point is the NBP mid-rate (National Bank of Poland), published every business day around noon. This rate is an impartial average — you cannot buy or sell currency at the NBP rate directly, but it serves as the official benchmark.
In 2026, exchange rates were approximately:
- EUR/PLN: approx. 4.25–4.35 PLN
- USD/PLN: approx. 3.85–4.05 PLN
- GBP/PLN: approx. 4.95–5.15 PLN
Rates change every minute during trading hours, meaning that for large amounts it is worth monitoring the market and choosing a favourable moment.
How to Convert EUR to PLN — Formula
The calculation is straightforward:
- Amount in PLN = amount in EUR × EUR/PLN rate
Example: you have 500 EUR, rate is 4.28 PLN.
- 500 × 4.28 = 2,140 PLN
Reverse — how many euros is a given PLN amount:
- Amount in EUR = amount in PLN ÷ EUR/PLN rate
- 2,140 ÷ 4.28 = 500 EUR
Buy Rate vs. Sell Rate — The Spread
Banks and exchange offices never apply the NBP rate directly. They charge a spread — the difference between the buy (bid) and sell (ask) rates. The wider the spread, the more expensive for the customer.
- Bank (counter): spread 3–5%, often additional commission.
- Physical exchange office: spread 1–2%, no extra fees.
- Online currency exchange (e.g. Cinkciarz, Walutomat): spread 0.1–0.5%, most favourable for regular exchanges.
- Multi-currency card (e.g. Revolut, Wise): close to interbank rate on weekdays, higher on weekends.
Example: exchanging 10,000 EUR through a bank with a 3% spread costs approximately 1,275 PLN more than using an online exchange with a 0.5% spread.
When Is the Best Time to Exchange Currency?
The zloty is sensitive to several factors:
- Monetary Policy Council (RPP) decisions: interest rate hikes in Poland strengthen the zloty.
- Geopolitical situation: geopolitical uncertainty weakens PLN against reserve currencies (USD, CHF).
- Macroeconomic data from the Eurozone and USA: a strong US economy supports the dollar.
- Time of day: best liquidity and most favourable rates are between 9:00 and 17:00 on business days.
There is no guaranteed recipe for the "perfect" moment to exchange — so it is worth spreading a large exchange over several transactions (rate averaging).
