Commute Cost Calculator

The commute cost calculator helps you accurately work out how much you spend each month travelling between home and work. Simply enter the one-way distance, number of working days per month, fuel consumption and fuel price — the calculator instantly shows your fuel cost, vehicle depreciation, parking fees and public transport ticket cost. The average Polish commuter travels around 25–30 km per day to and from work. With fuel prices above 6 PLN/litre and typical consumption of 7–8 litres per 100 km, these costs can easily reach several hundred zlotys per month — not counting tyre wear, oil changes and general vehicle depreciation. This calculator captures all those components, giving you a clear picture of your real commuting expenses and making it easier to compare driving versus public transport.

How we calculate commute costs

Monthly distance = one-way distance × 2 (round trip) × working days. Fuel cost = distance × consumption / 100 × fuel price. Depreciation = distance × PLN/km rate. Total cost = fuel + depreciation + parking + transit ticket. Daily cost = total / working days. Annual cost = monthly × 12.

Example: 15 km one way, 22 working days, 7 l/100km, fuel 6.50 PLN/l

Monthly distance: 15 km × 2 × 22 = 660 km. Fuel cost: 660 × 7 / 100 × 6.50 = 300.30 PLN. Depreciation (0.30 PLN/km): 660 × 0.30 = 198.00 PLN. Total: approx. 498 PLN/month, i.e. approx. 22.65 PLN/working day and approx. 5,978 PLN/year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my monthly commuting cost by car?

Monthly commuting cost = (one-way distance × 2 × working days per month × fuel consumption / 100 × fuel price) + (monthly distance × depreciation rate PLN/km) + parking. For example, 15 km one way, 22 days, 7 l/100km, 6.50 PLN/l, 0.30 PLN/km depreciation: fuel 300.30 PLN + depreciation 198.00 PLN = 498.30 PLN/month.

What depreciation rate per kilometre should I use for my car?

The Polish tax office (KAS) sets the mileage reimbursement rate for private cars at 0.8358 PLN/km (2024–2026). This rate covers fuel, wear and tear, insurance and other running costs. As a simple rule of thumb, 0.25–0.35 PLN/km covers depreciation and maintenance excluding fuel. Our calculator defaults to 0.30 PLN/km for depreciation alone.

Is it cheaper to commute by car or public transport in Poland?

It depends on the distance and city. In large cities (Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław) a monthly transit pass costs 110–160 PLN and covers unlimited travel. A 15 km car commute costs around 400–600 PLN per month in fuel and depreciation alone. Public transport is almost always cheaper for urban commutes under 20 km.

The Polish average is 20–23 working days per month depending on public holidays. A common default is 22 days. If you work part-time or hybrid (e.g. 3 days in the office), enter the actual number of days you commute physically.

Yes, partially. Employees can deduct a fixed statutory amount for commuting costs from their taxable income: 250 PLN/month (3,000 PLN/year) for a local workplace or 300 PLN/month (3,600 PLN/year) for a workplace in a different municipality. Self-employed workers (B2B) may deduct actual commuting costs as business expenses if the journey is work-related.

If your employer provides a company car, your fuel costs may be fully or partially reimbursed. Some employers pay a flat monthly allowance or reimburse per kilometre. Check your employment contract. If you use your private car and are reimbursed at 0.8358 PLN/km, enter 0 for depreciation and subtract the reimbursement from total cost.

A 1 PLN/litre increase in fuel price adds (monthly distance × consumption / 100) PLN to your monthly bill. For a 660 km monthly commute at 7 l/100km, each 1 PLN/litre increase adds 46.20 PLN/month or 554.40 PLN/year. Use the calculator to model different fuel price scenarios.

Currently the calculator does not include toll costs as a separate field. If you regularly pay motorway tolls, add the estimated monthly toll amount to the parking field as a workaround, or add it manually to the total displayed by the calculator.

Run the calculator twice. First, enter your car details (distance, fuel consumption, fuel price, depreciation, parking) and set transit ticket to 0. Then set distance to 0, fuel and depreciation to 0, and enter only your monthly transit pass cost. Compare the two totals to see which option is cheaper.

For electric vehicles, enter the electricity cost equivalent in the fuel price field (e.g. electricity cost per kWh × consumption per 100 km / fuel price field). For hybrids, use the actual average fuel consumption. The depreciation rate (PLN/km) applies to all vehicle types. The calculator formula is fuel-agnostic — it uses the cost-per-litre and consumption you provide.

Results are estimates for informational purposes only. Actual costs may vary depending on driving style, vehicle condition, public transport fares and local fuel prices.
