Poland's driving penalty points system (PKD — Punkty Karno-Drogowe) was overhauled in 2022. Points are assigned per traffic offence according to a fixed tariff — from 1 point for minor speeding to 15 points for driving more than 51 km/h over the limit. The maximum allowed is 24 points (20 points for drivers within their first 2 years of holding a licence). Points expire 2 years after the date of the offence. Police and other services can check a driver's running total via the CEPIK national vehicle and driver register. Enter your estimated current penalty points total. The calculator shows how many points remain before the limit, your risk level (safe / warning / danger / suspension), and a brief description. This result is indicative only — official data is held exclusively in the CEPIK system.
The calculator compares the entered points total against the 24-point maximum and assigns a risk level on a four-tier scale: - 0-11 points: Safe level (below half the limit) - 12-17 points: Warning — more than half the limit used - 18-23 points: High danger — close to the limit - 24+ points: Licence suspension Decimal values are rounded to the nearest whole number. Negative values are treated as 0. Remaining points will never be shown as negative even if the limit is exceeded.
A driver has: 3 pts for speeding 11-15 km/h over the limit + 5 pts for using a mobile phone while driving = 8 points total. Limit: 24 points. Remaining: 16 points. Risk level: safe. If the driver then jumps a red light (+8 pts), the total rises to 16 — warning level. One more serious offence (e.g. +11 pts for speeding 31-40 km/h over the limit) would push the total above 24 and trigger licence suspension.
The maximum number of penalty points (PKD) is 24 for experienced drivers. New drivers (within the first 2 years of holding a licence) have a lower limit of 20 points. Exceeding the limit leads to licence suspension by the local authority (starosta).
Penalty points expire 2 years after the date of the offence for which they were issued. After expiry they are automatically removed from the CEPIK register. There is no longer any way to reduce points early — the 2022 reform removed early-expiry training courses.
Points depend on the degree of speeding: 1-10 km/h over — 1 pt, 11-15 km/h — 3 pts, 16-20 km/h — 5 pts, 21-25 km/h — 7 pts, 26-30 km/h — 9 pts, 31-40 km/h — 11 pts, 41-50 km/h — 13 pts, 51+ km/h — 15 pts.
You can check your official penalty points balance through the CEPIK portal at gov.pl after logging in with a Trusted Profile (Profil Zaufany) or e-ID. You can also submit a request to the local starostwo or vehicle registration office.
Driving after drinking (0.2-0.5 per mille blood alcohol) earns 10 penalty points. Drink-driving (above 0.5 per mille) is a criminal offence and results in a driving ban — points are secondary to the criminal sanction in that case.
The local authority (starosta) issues a decision withdrawing driving entitlement. The driver must retake both the theory and practical driving tests before being allowed to drive again.
Running a red traffic light results in 8 penalty points. It is one of the more serious traffic offences and also carries a fine of up to PLN 1,500.
No — since 17 September 2022 there is no mechanism to reduce points before their 2-year expiry date. The option of attending voluntary training courses to remove points was abolished by the 2022 road safety reform.
Using a mobile phone or other electronic device while driving (without a hands-free kit) results in 5 penalty points and a fine of up to PLN 1,500. This applies to holding the phone to your ear as well as any handheld use.
