Veterinary Cost Calculator

Veterinary care is one of the main expenses of pet ownership. Annual vet costs for a dog or cat depend on the species, age, breed, and number of visits. This calculator estimates spending on routine check-ups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, an emergency fund, and optional pet insurance — all in one place.

How the veterinary cost calculator works

The calculator estimates annual vet costs as follows: 1. Routine cost = number of visits x average visit cost 2. Vaccination and prevention costs are multiplied by a risk factor based on age and breed 3. Risk factor: puppy/kitten x1.2 | adult x1.0 | senior x1.5; mixed breed x1.0 | purebred x1.25 4. Emergency fund = 50% of routine costs + vaccinations + prevention 5. Insurance cost = monthly premium x 12 (if selected) 6. Total = sum of all components; monthly cost = total / 12

Example: adult mixed-breed dog, 2 visits per year, no insurance

Inputs: dog, adult, mixed breed, 2 visits x PLN 200 = PLN 400 (routine costs). Vaccinations: PLN 350 x 1.0 = PLN 350. Prevention: PLN 300 x 1.0 = PLN 300. Base total: PLN 1,050. Emergency fund (50%): PLN 525. No insurance: PLN 0. Total: PLN 1,575/year, approx. PLN 131/month.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a vet visit cost in Poland in 2026?

The average cost of a veterinary visit in Poland in 2026 ranges from PLN 80 to PLN 250 depending on the city and clinic. In large cities, a consultation costs PLN 150–250. In smaller towns, expect to pay PLN 80–150. Specialist visits (cardiologist, neurologist, oncologist) cost PLN 300–600 or more.

What are the annual veterinary costs for a dog?

Annual vet costs for an adult mixed-breed dog in a medium-sized city are estimated at PLN 1,500–2,500, including 2 routine visits, vaccinations, deworming, parasite prevention, and an emergency buffer. For a senior dog or a purebred, costs can be 50–90% higher due to a greater tendency to illness.

Is pet insurance worth it for a dog or cat?

Pet insurance in Poland costs PLN 50–150 per month. It covers unexpected treatment costs that can reach PLN 3,000–20,000 for surgery or hospitalisation. For purebred animals prone to hereditary diseases, insurance is particularly advisable. For healthy mixed breeds, building your own emergency fund is a viable alternative.

Annual dog vaccinations cost around PLN 200–400 and include booster doses for distemper, parvovirus, infectious hepatitis, leptospirosis and rabies (mandatory in Poland). Cat vaccinations (trio + FeLV) cost around PLN 150–300 per year.

Deworming products for dogs cost PLN 30–80 per dose, given every 3 months — about PLN 120–320 per year. Flea and tick prevention (spot-on drops, collars, tablets) adds PLN 200–500 per year for a dog. For cats, costs are roughly 30% lower. Total annual parasite prevention: PLN 200–600.

Animals over 7–8 years old need more frequent health checks (every 6 months instead of once a year), blood and urine tests monitoring kidney and liver function, and are more prone to cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and other age-related conditions. The calculator applies a risk factor of 1.5 for seniors.

Yes. Purebred dogs and cats more frequently suffer from breed-specific hereditary diseases (e.g. hip dysplasia in Labradors, breathing problems in Pugs). The calculator applies a risk factor of 1.25 for purebreds compared to mixed breeds, reflecting statistically higher lifetime vet costs.

The emergency fund is a financial buffer for unexpected vet costs such as injury treatment, sudden illness, surgery, or hospitalisation. The calculator estimates it as 50% of routine costs (visits + vaccinations + prevention). In practice, keeping PLN 2,000–5,000 in reserve or having pet insurance is recommended.

Ways to reduce costs: regular prevention avoids expensive treatments; choose a vet clinic outside the city centre; clinic loyalty programmes offering health packages; pet insurance for high-risk breeds; buy prevention products from pet shops rather than clinics; timely vaccinations prevent costly infectious diseases.

Veterinary surgery costs in Poland in 2026: neutering/spaying PLN 300–800, tumour removal PLN 1,500–6,000, spinal surgery PLN 5,000–15,000, heart surgery PLN 8,000–25,000, fracture treatment PLN 2,000–8,000. Surgery costs should include diagnostics (X-ray, ultrasound, blood tests: PLN 300–1,500) and post-operative care.
