Trip split calculator 2026

Group travel is one of life's great pleasures, but splitting expenses fairly can quickly become a source of tension and confusion. Who paid for the fuel? Who covered the dinner bill? How much does each person owe the organiser? Our trip split calculator answers all these questions in seconds, giving every participant a clear and transparent breakdown of shared costs. Enter the number of travellers and the total costs in five main categories: transport (fuel, tickets, car hire), accommodation (hotels, apartments, campsites), food and drinks (restaurants, groceries, cafés), attractions (sightseeing, sports, entrance fees) and other expenses (insurance, parking, tips). The calculator sums all amounts and divides them equally among the group. If one person — for example the trip organiser — paid a large sum upfront (hotel reservation, flight tickets, fuel), enter that amount in the 'One person paid' field. The calculator will automatically work out that person's overpayment — the amount that the other participants need to transfer back to them. This tool eliminates the awkward post-trip money conversations and ensures everyone pays exactly their fair share. The calculator works entirely in your browser, is completely free and requires no registration. You can easily save or share the results with your fellow travellers. Whether you are planning a weekend getaway with friends, a family holiday, a company team-building trip or a backpacking adventure, our calculator handles groups of 2 to 20 people and delivers instant, precise results with no complex maths required on your part.

How we calculate the trip cost split

Total expenses = transport + accommodation + food + attractions + other costs. Per-person cost = total expenses ÷ number of people (rounded to 2 decimal places). If one person paid upfront, overpayment = max(0, amount paid − per-person cost). An overpayment of zero means that person paid at most their fair share. The calculator always applies an equal split — every participant pays the same amount. All amounts in Polish zloty (PLN).

Example: 4 people on a mountain weekend

Four friends head to the mountains for a weekend. Costs: transport (fuel and motorway tolls) PLN 800, accommodation (2-night apartment) PLN 1,200, food (restaurants and groceries) PLN 600, attractions (cable car, museum tickets) PLN 400, other (parking, insurance) PLN 200. Total expenses = 800 + 1,200 + 600 + 400 + 200 = PLN 3,200. Per person = 3,200 ÷ 4 = PLN 800. If Anna paid for the apartment (PLN 1,200) by card, she covered more than her share. Her total outlay is PLN 1,200; her share is PLN 800; so her overpayment is PLN 400. Each of the other three people needs to transfer PLN 133.33 to Anna to settle up.

Frequently asked questions

How does the trip split calculator work?

The calculator adds up all cost categories (transport, accommodation, food, attractions and other), then divides the total equally by the number of participants. If one person paid more than their share upfront, the calculator also shows their overpayment — the amount the others need to transfer back to them.

How many people can split costs with this calculator?

The calculator supports groups of 2 to 20 people. This covers everything from a couple's weekend away to a large group trip, company outing or family holiday.

What is the 'overpayment' result?

Overpayment is the amount one person paid above their equal share of the total costs. For example, if the per-person cost is PLN 800 and the organiser paid PLN 2,000, their overpayment is PLN 1,200 — that is what the other participants owe them in total to settle up.

The current version applies an equal split between all participants. For unequal splits (e.g. one person has a larger room or skips some activities), adjust the costs manually before entering them into the calculator.

Popular group expense apps include Splitwise, Tricount and Settle Up. They let you log expenses as they happen, assign costs to specific people and send payment reminders. Our calculator is perfect for a quick overview before or after the trip.

After the trip, collect all receipts and invoices, categorise them by type, and enter the totals into our calculator. The result shows how much each person owes. Those who paid less can transfer the balance to those who paid more, either individually or via a shared payment app.

A typical weekend trip for 4 people in Poland costs PLN 1,500–3,500 in total, or PLN 375–875 per person. Costs depend on accommodation standard, distance travelled, chosen activities and dining style. Our calculator helps you estimate costs before departure and settle up accurately afterwards.

Yes. A shared fund (a cash envelope or a shared pot in a banking app) simplifies expense management. Each person pays in an estimated amount before the trip, and you settle any difference on return. The calculator helps you determine how much each person should contribute upfront.

Agree on the ground rules before you leave: equal split for everything, or pay-your-own at restaurants? Collect receipts throughout the trip, use an expense-tracking app, and settle up promptly after returning while everyone still remembers. Transparency and a reliable calculator are the best tools for dispute-free group travel.

Total = transport + accommodation + food + attractions + other. Per person = total ÷ number of people. Overpayment = max(0, amount one person paid − per-person cost). All values in PLN.

This calculator is for indicative group expense splitting only. Results are informational. For larger sums, confirm figures with all participants and keep receipts or invoices as documentation.
