How we calculate the train fare
Ticket price = distance (km) × PLN 0.14/km × class factor (2nd class: 1.0; 1st class: 1.5) × discount factor (none: 1.0; under-26: 0.49; student: 0.51; senior: 0.49; family: 0.67). Return price is double the one-way fare. Cost per km = one-way price / distance.
Example fare calculation
Warsaw–Kraków route (approx. 300 km), 2nd class, student discount (49%): 300 × 0.14 × 1.0 × 0.51 = PLN 21.42 one way. Return ticket: PLN 42.84. Cost per km: PLN 0.0714/km.
Frequently asked questions about train costs
How is the PKP ticket price calculated?
The calculator multiplies the distance in km by the base rate of PLN 0.14/km, then by the wagon class factor and the selected discount factor to produce an indicative one-way fare.
How much more expensive is 1st class compared to 2nd class?
1st class tickets cost 50% more than 2nd class. The class factor is 1.5 for 1st class and 1.0 for 2nd class.
What rail discounts does the calculator support?
The calculator covers: no discount (full price), under-26 discount (51% off), student discount (49% off), senior discount (51% off), and family discount (33% off).
Is the result the same as the price on PKP Intercity website?
No. PKP prices depend on train type, seat availability, day of travel and promotions. The calculator provides an estimate based on an averaged per-km rate.
How is the return fare calculated?
The calculator automatically doubles the one-way fare and displays it as the total cost for a return journey.
What does cost per km tell me?
Cost per km is the one-way fare divided by the distance. It lets you compare the value of different routes and transport modes, for example train versus car or bus.
What distance range does the calculator cover?
The calculator works for distances from 10 to 1000 km, covering both short regional trips and long-distance intercity journeys.
Are the under-26 and student discounts the same?
No. The under-26 discount gives 51% off based solely on age. The student discount gives 49% off and requires a valid university student card. Both require proof of entitlement during ticket inspection.
Does the calculator include promotional fares?
No. The calculator uses standard published rates. For promotional offers such as SuperPromo or weekend tickets, check the PKP Intercity website directly.
Can I use the calculator to compare train vs car travel?
Yes. Compare the cost per km from this calculator with your estimated car cost per km (fuel + depreciation). Train travel is often cheaper per km on longer routes.
Calculator results are indicative and based on an averaged per-km rate. Actual PKP ticket prices may vary depending on the train type, seat availability, day of travel and current promotions. This calculator does not constitute a commercial offer or financial advice.
