How we calculate language learning costs
The calculator determines the monthly cost based on the base price of the learning format: language school PLN 350, private tutor PLN 480, online course PLN 80, app PLN 40. It then applies a language multiplier (Japanese ×1.3; German/French ×1.1; others ×1.0) and a level multiplier (C1/C2 ×1.2; others ×1.0). Monthly cost = round(base × language_multiplier × level_multiplier). Total cost = monthly × months. Saving vs school = difference from school cost multiplied by months.
Example language course cost calculation
Learning English at B1/B2 level at a language school for 12 months: PLN 350 × 1.0 (English) × 1.0 (B1/B2) = PLN 350/month → PLN 4,200/year. The same course online: PLN 80/month → PLN 960/year. Saving vs language school: (350 − 80) × 12 = PLN 3,240.
Frequently asked questions about language learning costs
How much does a language school course cost in Poland?
The average cost of a language school course is around PLN 350 per month for English at A1–B2 level. Rarer languages (e.g. Japanese) or advanced C1–C2 levels can be 20–30% more expensive. The annual cost of English at a language school is around PLN 4,200.
Is learning with a mobile app cheaper than a language school?
Yes — language learning apps typically cost PLN 30–60 per month, which is about 10% of the cost of a traditional language school. However, they are supplementary tools that work best when combined with other methods or for highly self-disciplined learners.
How does the cost of a private tutor compare to an online course?
A private tutor is the most expensive learning format at around PLN 480/month (assuming 4–5 hours of lessons), while an online course costs around PLN 80/month. Individual tutoring is the most effective, however, as the programme adapts to the learner's needs.
Does the proficiency level affect the course price?
Yes — C1–C2 level courses require higher-skilled teachers and more advanced materials, making them around 20% more expensive than beginner and intermediate (A1–B2) courses. The calculator applies this multiplier in its calculations.
How do I calculate the total cost of a year of language learning?
The calculator multiplies the monthly cost of the chosen learning format by the number of months. For example, a language school, English, B1/B2 for 12 months: PLN 350 × 12 = PLN 4,200.
Which foreign language is cheapest to learn and which is most expensive?
English, Spanish and Italian have similar costs (multiplier 1.0). German and French are slightly more expensive (multiplier 1.1), while Japanese is the most expensive (multiplier 1.3) due to the complexity of the writing system and fewer available teachers.
How many months does it take to reach B2 level?
According to CEFR, reaching B2 level from zero requires approximately 500–650 hours of study for Germanic or Romance languages, which at 4 hours per week means about 30–36 months. For Japanese it can be 1,000+ hours.
Can an online course replace a language school?
An online course can be just as effective as a language school if the programme is well-structured and the learner regularly practises speaking (e.g. with a native speaker online). However, for many people, classroom interaction builds motivation and corrects pronunciation more effectively.
What are the additional costs of language learning beyond the course?
Additional costs include textbooks and materials (PLN 50–200 per semester), certification exams such as FCE, TELC, JLPT (PLN 150–600), and any pre-exam tutoring. The calculator shows only the cost of the course itself.
Is investing in a foreign language worthwhile?
Definitely — knowledge of English at B2+ level increases earnings in Poland by an average of 15–30% according to GUS data. The cost of several years of study pays back already at the first salary increase or job change.
The calculator provides estimated language learning costs based on average market prices in Poland. Actual course prices may vary depending on city, provider, lesson length and additional materials. Results are indicative and do not constitute a commercial offer.
